Cutting Your Electric Bill is
A Lot Easier Than You Might Think!

Below you'll find a list of energy saving tips, presented in order of
greatest potential impact on your electricity bill. To find the best level of
efficiency for all products, it's a good idea to start with those labeled "Energy Star" by the EPA and the DOE.

Climate Control
: A typical household uses the bulk of its energy for heating and cooling -- up to 44% of the utility bill, according to the DOE's Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Network (EREN).

Programmable Thermostats can reduce energy wasted heating or cooling a house when no one is home or everyone's asleep.

According to the Home Energy Saver site, Energy Star programmable thermostats can save as much as 20% to 30% on your heating or cooling costs by allowing for multiple daily settings and automatically adjusting when the outside temperature changes.

Ceiling Fans: Moving air tends to feel cooler, allowing for higher summertime thermostat settings. According to EREN, the effect is equivalent to lowering the air temperature by about 4 degrees F
(2 degrees C), and using less energy than air conditioners to do so.

Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL's): CFL's use up to 75% less energy than standard incandescent bulbs and last up to 10 times longer, according to Home Energy Saver. They cost more initially, so it's a good idea to order in bulk.

Energy-efficient Appliances: Among household appliances, the refrigerator is likely your biggest energy consumer, especially if it's more than 15 years old. It can account for up to 9% of your energy costs alone. Again, use the Energy Star site for a list of energy-efficient models if you're looking to replace yours.

Water Heating:
Heating water is the third-biggest home-energy cost and typically accounts for 14%-20% of your energy bill. That's why we recommend hot water jackets to help insulate the storage tank in your water heater system.  They prevent a waste of energy from heat lost in the surrounding space.

Aerating, Low-flow Faucets and Showerheads:  Faucet aerators combine air with water to reduce water flow without reducing water pressure.  Low-flow faucets and showerheads along with low-water consumption toilets do the same thing:  save water with no loss of pressure.

More Green Living Tips

Use Homemade Remedies: Rather than buying cleaners, detergents, and other products with harsh chemicals, make your own with simple ingredients you have lying around the house. For example, combine baking soda and vinegar, and flush with boiling water, for an effective drain cleaner; use lemon juice to remove mildew; and use corn starch to deodorize carpet.

Treat Your Body to Green Living: Be aware of what you put into and on your body, and you'll be living a greener – and healthier – life.   For example, purchase organic meats, produce, dairy products, and eggs, and you'll  reduce the number of pesticides and genetically modified food that you eat.  Many beauty products such as soap, lotion, shampoo/conditioner, and cosmetics are made with artificial fragrances and chemicals. Look for beauty products that are all-natural, made with herbal and flower extracts. Also look for beauty products that are packaged in recycled or recyclable containers, and that have not been tested on animals.

Think Locally: Buying locally produced meat, produce, and dairy products helps the environment in many ways, and also helps the local economy. Consider shopping at farmers' markets or looking for foods labeled “locally grown” in specialty stores. Why is buying locally a good idea?  Since food has less distance to travel, it doesn't need as much packaging or preservatives. You also will help to conserve fuel.

Keep Your Home in Good Repair: Being conscious of various places in your home that can help or harm the environment is an important step to living green. Here are some ideas for keeping your home in good repair in order to reduce water and energy usage:

• Make sure all faucets and toilets are in good repair and don't leak. A leaky faucet or toilet can waste massive amounts of water every day.

• Install plastic window energy conservation kits to reduce the cold air coming in from the outside. You'll be able to set your thermostat lower and save money and energy while heating your house.

Drive Intelligently: Living green does not necessarily mean going out and buying a hybrid car. You can reduce your energy and gas consumption without having to buy a whole new vehicle by being a conscientous driver.

Combine Errands: As much as you can, combine your errands to reduce the amount of your driving. Also, look for the shortest route between point A and point B by checking a map or looking up directions on the internet.

Use Human-energy Transportation: When you're just running out to the grocery store for a few items, try taking your bike or walking. You can carry a large string or cloth sack, or a backpack, to put your groceries in to carry them back home. You'll also be doing something good for your body!
